Tennessee Disability Resources: The Programs Worth Knowing

By Downard & Associates · 6 min read

Beyond the federal claim: the Tennessee programs and services that help disabled residents with health coverage, work, and daily living.

TennCare: Tennessee’s Medicaid

Tennessee’s Medicaid program, TennCare, provides health coverage for qualifying low-income and disabled residents — and SSI recipients in Tennessee are generally eligible. Health coverage questions and the disability claim usually need to be solved together.

Vocational Rehabilitation

The Tennessee Department of Human Services runs Vocational Rehabilitation services — training, assistive technology, and employment support for residents with disabilities, complementing the federal Ticket to Work program for those testing a return to work.

The Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities and DIDD

State agencies serve Tennesseans with developmental and intellectual disabilities with supports that run alongside SSI and Medicaid — relevant to families managing children’s SSI claims and age-18 transitions.

Local field offices and the hearing system

Social Security field offices across Middle Tennessee — Nashville, Clarksville, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Columbia and more — handle applications and records; hearings are held through offices including Nashville’s at 221 Cumberland Bend. Locate your office through the SSA office locator.

How the pieces fit
