Idaho Disability Lawyers: No Hearing Office of Its Own, and the Boise Address Is Not One
Idaho has no Social Security hearing office of its own. The office in Boise is a satellite of the Billings hearing office in Montana, and the panhandle is decided in Spokane, Washington, so every Idaho claim is decided under another state's hearing office.
Most states in this build have one surprising assignment. Idaho has an unresolved one, and it covers the four largest population centers in the state. That is not a reason to worry about a claim, but it is a reason to ask a question early that most people never think to ask at all.

Where your case is decided
Which Hearing Office Decides Your Idaho Disability Claim?
The judge, the queue and the calendar belong to the parent office.
One of two, and the locator settles every Idaho field office. Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston, in the panhandle, are assigned to Spokane in Washington. Caldwell is assigned to Billings in Montana. Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Twin Falls appear under Boise and under Billings both.
Worth setting expectations before anyone reads too much into that: a satellite is an ordinary arrangement rather than a downgrade. Social Security runs four of them in the country, and they let the agency keep a hearing location in a state whose caseload does not support an office of its own. The judge, the queue and the calendar belong to the parent office.
The practical answer is the same either way. The field office serving your address sets the assignment, and Social Security's own locator will answer it in a few minutes. Where you filed is what starts all of this.
What it changes and what it does not
Does the Hearing Office Matter to an Idaho Disability Claim?
Not for the rules. The standard applied to a file is federal and does not change whether it is read in Boise, Billings or Spokane, and no office has its own version of the test.
It changes the calendar. Each hearing office runs its own, and they do not move at the same speed, which is why the office holding your file is the one whose published wait is worth looking at rather than a national average.
It also changes where the letters come from, and that is worth saying plainly because a notice with a Montana return address unsettles people. A hearing office in another state is ordinary across the mountain west, and the deadline on that letter is exactly as real as one from Boise.
The panhandle is the clear part
Northern Idaho Disability Claims and the Spokane Hearing Office
Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston go to Spokane, and that assignment is not in dispute anywhere in the document. Northern Idaho is closer to Spokane than to Boise by any route, and Social Security draws these areas around travel rather than around state lines.
The same office takes work from eastern Washington and from northeast Oregon, so a panhandle claimant is in a queue shared across three states. Most hearings are held by phone or by video, and you can ask for one in person, so that shared queue is about scheduling rather than about travel.

Service area lines name Social Security field offices rather than cities or counties, which is how the assignment is actually made. The first two cards below overlap on purpose: that is what the hearing office locator shows.
Two hearing offices decide Idaho claims: Billings, Montana and Spokane, Washington. Boise is a satellite office. Billings and Spokane sit outside Idaho. Boise also takes claims filed in Oregon.
Every field office assignment and office address is on our hearing office routing page.
Average wait times change from month to month. Social Security publishes the average wait time for each hearing office and updates it monthly, so check the office that takes your claim.

Idaho SSDI Questions: Hearing Office Assignments and What They Change
Which hearing office has my Idaho claim?
One of two, and the locator settles every Idaho field office. Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston in the panhandle are assigned to Spokane, in Washington. Caldwell is assigned to Billings, in Montana. Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Twin Falls appear under Boise and under Billings both, which is why the honest answer for most of Idaho is to have it checked rather than read off a chart.
There is a Social Security hearing office in Boise. Why does Montana come into it?
Because the Boise address is a satellite rather than a hearing office. Social Security's locator lists it as a satellite of the Billings hearing office in Montana, which is the office with jurisdiction over southern Idaho claims. The building in Boise is real and hearings happen there. What it is not is an independent hearing office with its own service area.
My notice came from Montana. Is that a mistake?
Probably not. Billings covers a very wide territory including Idaho field offices, and a hearing office in another state is ordinary across the mountain west. What matters is that the notice is real and the deadline on it is real. If the office named surprises you, that is a reason to confirm the assignment, not a reason to set the letter aside.
Does it matter which office ends up with my case?
Not for the rules, which are federal, and apply the same way everywhere apart from a handful of issues where a court of appeals has required something different in its own circuit. It matters for the calendar, because each hearing office runs its own and they do not move at the same speed. Social Security publishes the current average wait for every office, so once you know which one has your file you can look up what that queue is actually doing.
What about the panhandle?
Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston go to Spokane, and that one is not in doubt. Northern Idaho sits closer to Spokane than to Boise by any route, and Social Security draws these areas around travel rather than around state lines. The same office also takes work from eastern Washington and northeast Oregon.
How do I find out for certain?
Ask, and use Social Security's own hearing office locator. The field office serving your address is what sets the assignment, so the question is answerable in a few minutes with the address in hand. It is the first thing we check on a call, and in Idaho it is worth checking rather than assuming more than in most states.
