Wyoming Disability Lawyers: No Hearing Office in the State, and the Claims Go Two Different Ways

Wyoming has no Social Security hearing office of its own. Its six field offices divide between two other states: Cody and Sheridan are decided in Billings, Montana, and Casper, Cheyenne, Riverton and Rock Springs are decided in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A state without an office is not unusual. A state divided between two of them is, and it means the first question here is not how far away the office is but which direction your file went. The answer turns on the field office serving your address and on nothing you can influence.

Where your case is decided

Which Hearing Office Decides Your Wyoming Disability Claim?

Wyoming is split, so the state has no single answer to give.

One of two, and which one depends on where you live. Cody and Sheridan in the north answer to Billings, in Montana. Casper, Cheyenne, Riverton and Rock Springs answer to Salt Lake City, in Utah.

Social Security places hearing offices by caseload rather than by state, and Wyoming's volume does not support one. Several states in that position send everything to a single neighbor, which is the simpler arrangement. Wyoming is split, so the state has no single answer to give.

Neither assignment is something a claimant or a representative chooses. It follows the Social Security field office serving your address, and if you are not certain which office that is, it is answerable in a few minutes.

The assignment nobody predicts

Why Cheyenne Disability Claims Are Heard in Utah and Not Colorado

Because these areas were drawn around the field office map rather than around the road map. Cheyenne sits roughly a hundred miles from Denver, which has a hearing office of its own, and roughly four hundred from Salt Lake City, which is where the hearing office locator assigns it.

Worth naming the reaction before the explanation, because everybody has it: that looks like a mistake and it is not one. Service areas follow the network of Social Security field offices and the regional structure behind them, and neither of those was laid out with a map of driving times.

The practical consequence is small in an era of remote hearings and worth knowing anyway. The office holding your file is in Utah, its calendar is the one that governs your case, and the wait figure to look up is that office's own.

What stays in Wyoming

The Wyoming Medical Decision on a Disability Claim

Only the hearing stage leaves, and only because there is no office in Wyoming to hold it.

The part that decides most claims. Social Security takes the application and settles the non-medical questions, then sends the file to Wyoming's disability determination agency for the medical review before taking it back.

So the stage where the great majority of claims are decided happens here, under federal rules, before anything crosses a state line. Only the hearing stage leaves, and only because there is no office in Wyoming to hold it.

We can tell you which office an address routes to and what that office's published wait is. What nobody can tell you from the outside is how a particular file will read once it gets there, which is the part worth spending effort on rather than on the geography.

The two offices

Every Hearing Office That Decides Wyoming Disability Claims

Service area lines name Social Security field offices rather than cities or counties, which is how the assignment is actually made.

Wyoming has no Social Security hearing office of its own. Claims filed here are decided by Billings and Salt Lake City, both in another state.

Every field office assignment and office address is on our hearing office routing page.

Average wait times change from month to month. Social Security publishes the average wait time for each hearing office and updates it monthly, so check the office that takes your claim.

Why is my Wyoming claim decided in another state?

Because there is no hearing office here. Social Security places these offices by caseload rather than by state, and Wyoming's claim volume does not support one, so its work is divided between offices in Montana and Utah. Several states in this position send everything to a single neighbor. Wyoming is unusual in being split two ways.

I live in Cheyenne. Why is my office in Utah rather than Colorado?

It surprises everybody and the answer is that these areas were not drawn around driving distance. Cheyenne is roughly a hundred miles from Denver, which has a hearing office, and roughly four hundred from Salt Lake City, which is the office the hearing office locator assigns it to. The line follows the field office map rather than the road map, and it is not a preference you enter on a form, though a claimant can ask Social Security to change the place of a hearing and it decides that on good cause, under 20 CFR 404.936(f) and (g).

How do I know whether my file went north or west?

By the field office serving your address. Cody and Sheridan answer to Billings; Casper, Cheyenne, Riverton and Rock Springs answer to Salt Lake City. If you are not sure which field office serves you, that is answerable in a few minutes from an address, and it is the first thing we check on a call.

Does the office that gets my file change my odds?

Not the standard applied to it. The definition of disability, the sequence of steps and the evidence rules are federal and the same in Billings, Salt Lake City and everywhere else. What differs between offices is the calendar, because each runs its own queue, and Social Security publishes the current average wait for every one of them.

If I move within Wyoming, can my case change offices?

It can, because the two halves of the state answer to different places. A move from Cheyenne to Sheridan changes the field office serving you, and that is what sets the hearing office, so a file can shift from Utah to Montana without leaving Wyoming. Tell Social Security about any move promptly. An address it does not have is the most common reason a notice goes astray.

Is the medical review on a Wyoming claim done in Wyoming?

Yes, and that part does not leave the state. Social Security takes the application and settles the non-medical questions, then sends the file to Wyoming's disability determination agency for the medical decision before taking it back. Only the hearing stage goes elsewhere, and only because there is no office here to hold it.

North or west? We can tell you in a few minutes.

Free case review, no obligation. We respond within 3 business hours. Tell us where you filed and we will tell you which office your address routes to. We work from Lebanon, Tennessee, with consultations by phone or video. There is no Wyoming office and none is implied.
